American Bulldog vs French Bulldog: What Sets Them Apart?

When it comes to pets, it’s hard to resist the sweetness that comes along with owning a dog. Dogs can be large, fluffy goofballs or they can be a constant companion.

With all the breeds available, you might be wondering which breed works best for you and your family’s needs. Specifically, you might be debating the merits of the American Bulldog vs French Bulldog. Read on to learn how they compare!

Companion or Guard Dog?

The American Bulldog and the French Bulldog couldn’t be more different. One major way in which they differ is the purpose these animals serve in a typical home.

American Bulldogs are often adopted to serve as a guard dog for the home. Thanks to the American Bulldog’s intelligence level and ease of training, it’s fairly simple to train them to protect the home while also being a loving family member. Their imposing stature is also a great deterrent to would-be ne’er-do-wells.

French Bulldogs are bred to be companion animals. They’re small and easy to travel with, and they form loving bonds with their handlers.

Size Matters

Perhaps the biggest difference between the French Bulldog and the American Bulldog is their size.

American Bulldogs are quite large. Male dogs average 95 pounds and 25 inches tall at the shoulder. Female American Bulldogs are smaller, averaging 80 pounds and 23 inches at the shoulder.

French Bulldogs are quite a bit smaller. They average 14.5 inches tall and weigh between 19 and 28 pounds.

Temperament

Both American Bulldogs and French Bulldogs develop close, loyal relationships with their families, but they do have some differences in temperament. American Bulldogs tend to be more playful than the French Bulldog, and they rank higher in intelligence. American Bulldogs also tend to be more playful than the Frenchie.

Only One is Recognized by the American Kennel Club

Looking for a dog with a long pedigree? Then you might opt for the French Bulldog. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the most respected registry of purebred dogs in the country, and they only began recognizing the American Bulldog as a breed in 2019.

Does it matter if the AKC doesn’t recognize a breed? Maybe! It’s a helpful resource if you’re looking for a breeder who has Frenchies for sale.
